With Kharkiv currently under constant shelling, many researchers and students are unable to pursue their studies or research in safety. To address this, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, National Science Center „Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology“ and the National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute" have launched the online seminar series „Kharkiv Chemical Seminar“ under the motto: “Be strong like Ukraine! Be brave like Kharkiv!” – aiming to ensure academic exchange and continuity in times of war.
Yesterday, Prof. Ferenc Krausz, Nobel Laureate in Physics and founder of Science4People e.V., delivered a lecture at the invitation of the hosting institutions as part of the Kharkiv Quantum Seminar.
This was not his first lecture for Kharkiv. Earlier this year, in March 2025, Prof. F. Krausz visited the city in person as part of a solidarity visit. For safety reasons, the lecture on “Fundamentals of Attosecond Physics” was held in a bomb shelter at the university.
The topic of his most recent online lecture was „From Attosecond Physics to Infrared Molecular Fingerprinting: Shaping the Future of Preventive Healthcare“. It explored approaches to predicting cancer and other non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases at the earliest possible stage, as well as global efforts to advance preventive and affordable personalized healthcare.
At the conclusion of the talk, Prof. Ferenc Krausz was awarded a Visiting Professorship by the host institutions – a gesture he accepted with gratitude and a smile:
“Visiting professorship means that I am supposed to visit you occasionally. I really would like to do this as soon as possible. And this will happen in the very foreseeable future,” Prof. Ferenc Krausz said in closing.
